Creating a plant wall.

How did I create my plant wall?

Plants on wall

A few days after completing the plant wall.

Tbh, this blog was  collecting dust in my notes on my iPhone. This was written Spring 2022, but not published until now (Summer 2023).

Summer 2021

One morning over the summer I visited Ampersand- a coffee shop on Texas Christian University (TCU) campus to work on Pickney Pocket. As I entered the coffee shop, I was captivated by the beautiful artificial plant wall; I have never seen a plant wall before. If I did, it was not nice because it did not have a lasting impact.

During this period, I was in the process of purchasing my first home in Houston. The home at the time had abundant natural light thought out, especially in the room I labeled to be my office. I couldn’t help but to think, “this would be absolutely perfect for my office.”

Fast forward to Winter 2022

Finding the planters

After settling down in my new home, I planned out the process of planning and creating my plant wall. I browsed online tirelessly to find the planters I desired, most of the planters included artificial plants, which did not align with my vision. Eventually, I found planters I desired on Amazon that were affordable and were self-watering — a bonus. What’s more, these planters had a width of 5 inches.

Finding the plants

I desired plants that will grow and hang (i.e. pathos) and smaller plants to compliment the hanging plants (i.e. cacti). I purchased plants from a local garden center — Houston Garden Center and Ikea.

The ladder to the left was too short, but the one to the right was the perfect

The process of creating the plant wall in my office.

Steps to create plant wall

  1. Gather all your items (see above)

  2. Mark the locations on the wall where you would like to place each planter with a sticky note or pencil.

  3. Using a nail or screw mount your empty planters to the wall with a hammer or drill/screwdriver respectively. Note: Using a drill saves time.

  4. Pour water into each planter to the maximum water line shown on the planter.

  5. Place plants in the empty bladder. Note: I separated some of the plants at the root to have multiple sets of plants from one pot. This took time because I did not want to harm the roots.

  6. Place the bladder containing the plant into each individual planter.

I enjoyed creating my plant wall and the benefits to having one in your home is endless.
